Luna Tips is a planned tool for small hospitality venues in the UK. It would record the tips, gratuities and service charge you receive, share them out under your written policy using hours from Luna Rota, and keep the records you may need to show.

Why now
The Employment (Allocation of Tips) Act 2023 applies to every employer whose workers receive qualifying tips, with no minimum size. Employers are expected to share tips fairly, have a written policy workers can read, keep records, and pass tips on promptly.
For a small venue, that has often meant a notebook, a spreadsheet and a lot of goodwill. Luna Tips is planned to replace that with one clear record: what came in, how it was shared, and who was paid what.
- Tips are expected to be paid by the end of the month after the month the customer paid.
- Records are expected to be kept for at least 3 years.
- A worker can ask to see their own tipping record.

Policy builder
Choose equal per hour, role points times hours, or split pools. Each version is kept, with a readable page and PDF for staff.
Daily tip entry
Record card, cash and service charge tips each day. Cash is confirmed by a second person.
Hours from Luna Rota
Pull hours from published Rota weeks. Any manager adjustment is recorded with a reason.
Exact shares, locked periods
Shares are worked out to the penny, with leftover pennies carried forward. The owner approves and locks the period; later corrections are added as new rows.
Payout files and deadlines
CSV export for payroll or a troncmaster, a PDF period report, a "pay by" date for each period and a daily reminder to managers.
A record for each worker
Staff see only their own tip lines and can request their record. The manager releases a statement, and a request log tracks the due date.
Retention you control
Choose how long records are kept, with a minimum of 3 years from the payment date.
Not planned: tax or National Insurance calculation, filing anything with HMRC, or covering self-employed people. Card-tip import from point-of-sale systems and payroll integrations are possible later work.

The owner sets the method and who is in the pool. Publishing creates a new version staff can read.
Record the tips
Enter each day's card, cash and service charge tips and where they came from.
Confirm hours
Hours come from your published Luna Rota shifts. Adjust where needed, with a reason.
Calculate and lock
Shares are calculated to the penny. The owner approves and locks the period.
Pay out and keep records
Export the figures for payroll or your troncmaster, and keep the period report on file.
Who it's for
Luna Tips is aimed at owners and managers of small hospitality venues in the UK, such as pubs, bars, cafes and restaurants, where staff receive tips or service charge.
- Owners and licensees write the policy, approve and lock each period, and release worker statements.
- Managers record daily tips, confirm hours and prepare payout figures.
- Staff read the policy, see only their own tip lines, and can ask for their record.
It is planned to work alongside Luna Rota, which supplies staff and shifts.
Questions
Is Luna Tips available now?
No. It is in planning and nothing has been built yet. You can register interest and we will keep you in mind as it develops.
Does it cost anything?
Pricing has not been decided.
Will it make my venue compliant with the law?
No tool can do that on its own. Luna Tips is designed to help you keep the policy, records and payout figures the law expects. This is not legal advice; check your duties with a qualified adviser.
Does it work out tax or National Insurance?
No. It is not planned to calculate tax or National Insurance, or to file anything with HMRC. Tax treatment depends on your circumstances; ask a qualified adviser.
Can staff see what their colleagues get?
The plan is that staff see only their own tip lines, not colleagues' amounts or team totals. This design choice is still awaiting final approval.
Do I need Luna Rota?
Hours are planned to come from Luna Rota. Whether Luna Tips can be bought without it has not been decided.
Can it import card tips from my till?
Not in the first version. Importing from point-of-sale providers and payroll integrations are listed as later work.
